Ways to get your family to eat healthy foods

As a wife and mom of two, I don’t always have a lot of time to prepare food and make sure my family is eating healthily.  The temptation to snack on fast foods and buy microwave meals that aren’t particularly nutritious is strong.  Yet, we have stopped eating those types of food over a month ago.   There are plenty of easy ways you can make sure your family is getting the healthy necessities, and they wont always be aware they’re eating it.

Fruit

Give them and yourself a small bowl of mixed fruits to snack on during the day. If it’s available, it’s likely it will get eaten!  You can cut up a banana or apple etc into chunks with a couple of grapes on top.  Store it in a container in the fridge so that whenever someone wants a snack, it’s readily available.  It’s a good way to snack during a foxy bingo game when you’re having some down time.

Cut up vegetables

Here’s a great idea for those who don’t like veggies. Whether you’re making spaghetti or chili, chop up vegetables into tiny piece and stir them into the sauce you are making. Hidden by the sauce and the meats, the little ones will be none the wiser that they have just eaten carrots!  And you’re making sure they’re getting the vital vitamins andy nutrients they need.  My husband and I also hide veggies in smoothies, everything from fresh spinach leaves to cauliflower.

Special Treats

While store bought goodies are convenient, they can be filled with all kinds of artificial flavors and preservatives that are not good for you at all.   By making your own, you can control the amounts of unhealthy ingredients, and can even substitute in healthier ingredients to make them better for the family.  Some healthy substitutes include whole wheat flower, honey, and agave.

What are your tips on getting your family to eat healthier?

These are some great tips thank you, sadly in our home the little two eat healthier then I do. Something I like to do is get bags of snacks then get the little snack ziplock bags and put a little in them. so they can just grab it when they serve themselves they tend to get to much. We do the same with servings of veggies I figure that way they can make sure they are getting the required amount.

I think that making healthier snacks is an awesome idea. I tend to forget that thanks 🙂

This made me so hungry, and I agree with your post! It’s better to make your own snacks, and prepare them, instead of wasting money at the store on things thats full of bad things.
