Organizing Tip: Storing Kids Puzzle Pieces

Kids Puzzle Organization

My girls have so many toys, it’s important to keep them organized or we’ll end up with a disaster zone. I must admit, at times it sure does look like a tornado swept through the house, but I try my best to keep things as organized as possible. With a little one, that can be pretty hard.

My girls enjoy doing puzzles and we’ve collected quite a few over the years. As you already know, the pieces are so small that they’re always getting lost or end up all over her bedroom floor. Once a piece gets lost, there goes the puzzle! No one wants to do a puzzle they can’t complete.

Along with puzzles, board games are also popular with kids since they can be a good pastime and enjoyable as well. It is not uncommon for parents to buy their kids board games (similar to Disney Board Games) so that they will stay engaged and entertained.

Coming back to organizing puzzle pieces, the boxes the puzzles come in are pretty bulky. Once they’ve been opened they can’t really be shut well so all the pieces keep falling out. It’s really not ideal to store your puzzles in the boxes they came in. After losing numerous puzzle pieces, I knew I had to come up with a better space saving solution for puzzle organization.

After a little thought, I came up with a great, simple solution that’s very inexpensive, easy to do, and it works well for me and my girls. Now they’re no longer overwhelmed by boxes and boxes of puzzles, they can find what they’re looking for and put them away easily when finished.

Getting Puzzles Organized

To get your kids puzzle pieces nicely organized, all you’ll need is a plastic bin and one quart sized ziploc bag for each complete set of puzzle pieces. Each puzzle will go in it’s own bag. I cut out the pictures from the front of the original boxes so it’s easy to see what each puzzle is and the girls can find which puzzle they want to do. The pictures also help as a guide for putting the puzzles together, so don’t throw them out!

All of the puzzles are now neatly stored on a shelf in a plastic bin. I no longer have to worry about missing pieces. It’s a very simple solution, and it works well! If you’re looking for a way to organize your kids puzzles, try this and let me know if it works for you.

What a neat idea, my daughter is always loosing puzzle pieces all over the house. I ended up putting them in one box she now has to look through the pieces to find the missing ones to her puzzles. This is going to be one way to save her time, me energy and have fun with them 🙂 thank you so much for sharing

I agree! This is a great way to keep up with all those pieces, especially since the boxes get torn so easily!

I feel like such an idiot. After having 6 kids {and one more just starting to do the simple ones} that love doing puzzles and picking them up for free almost everywhere, I have been drowning in boxes. It never crossed my mind to store them this way. Thank you for sharing this, I hope to get all the closets clutter free of all the puzzle boxes and neatly stored in bags by the end of the month. Better yet, it is something that the kids can do!

Yes, saves lots of space, and you can get the kids to help with it!

Now this should be a now brainer but I usually buy wooden puzzles for the smaller kids ( they lose pieces) the boxed ones I just tape up real good with wide tape and put a big rubber band around them.

I am glad I found this! I had the same idea about the Ziploc bags, but was going to try to put them in a binder. This is much easier. One tip for keeping puzzle pieces with the right bag/picture is to put a specific mark on the back of each puzzle piece, puzzle picture, and Ziploc bag. That way if a puzzle gets out, you don’t have to spend forever trying to figure out which puzzle it goes with.

Thanks for the tip Jennifer! That is a greta idea…I wish I had though of that. My 3 year old LOVES to get into everything. Of course, she got to the puzzles and decided to take them all out of their bags! I would have had a much easier time getting the pieces together if they were marked.

This is a great way to store them!! I have a good friend who puts numbers on the back, each puzzle has a number, so all of the pieces to puzzle A will be labeled with a 1, and puzzle B will all have a 2 on the back.
